Aston Design Concepts
Industrial designers at Aston developed a range of product concepts created using Kenyan made AB3D printers. Ten product case studies were produced that demonstrate the depth and diversity of 3D printing. Please select a concept to find out more information and download the digital file.

0University of Nairobi
The acquisition of the 3D printer enabled students and staff to gain practical accessible knowledge on its impact on design. In the few months we have had the printer students had staff have undertaken research on other institutions that use them for design and education; the school has had at least 2 training sessions and the third year students were able to make prototypes with the printer. The University has other 3D printers that students have been using for their final year projects but these printers are quite far for students to access. So, students would travel the distances for their final prototypes, and because of lack of expertise, coupled with little time, the technicians ended up executing the designs for them. Now, with early exposure and beginning with simple tasks, the students are able to interact with the printer and undertake more complex designs as they proceed in their education. It has not been without challenges and the developers have made several follow up visits to correct and make necessary adjustments. In many regards the advantage the printer provides is that it is easily accessible to the designers, it is practical and it opens a lot of opportunities for better design and prototypes. With time we shall look for more sophisticated and bigger capacity printers.
